Indian Railways plans Nuclear Power Plant with NPCIL

Indian Railways has approached Nuclear Power Corp of India to set up a 1000 MW nuclear power plant on railway land on its behalf.

The proposal has just reached the Department of Atomic Energy ( of which NPCIL is a part ) and DAE will discuss the modalities of setting up the power plant, including the shareholding pattern. It may be noted that the department does not allow any third party, that is other than NPCIL, to hold a majority stake in nuclear power plants. The Railway monopoly is not new to power generation.

Indian Railways already has a joint venture NTPC for setting up a 1000 MW captive power plant at Nabinagar in Aurangabad district of Bihar. Bhartiya Rail Bijlee Company, the JV is likely to commission the first 250 MW by March 2012 and balance three have been planned to be commissioned after every three months thereafter.
